Talking to your family about end-of-life plans

Last updated October 27, 2026 · 3 min read

Many families never have this conversation, and the people left behind end up guessing. A short, calm talk now can save a lot of stress later.

Ways to start

  • "I've been sorting out some paperwork and want you to know where things are."
  • Use a moment that comes up naturally, such as another family's funeral or updating a will.
  • Keep the first conversation short. It doesn't have to cover everything.

What to cover

  • Your basic wishes: burial or cremation, type of service
  • How costs will be paid, and where the policies or plans are
  • Who your executor is
  • Where your documents are kept

Our funeral planning checklist is a good thing to fill in together.
